10 Most Common Items To Check For MA State Inspections

  1. Seat belts: Make sure that all seatbelts, even rarely used ones, are in proper working order. Also check rear folding seats to ensure they haven't pinched the seatbelt preventing it from working.
  2. Window tint: Ensure any window tints are within the 35% or less range of visibility.
  3. Body damage: Rust holes, rotted or rusted edges, and other significant body damage must be properly repaired.
  4. Bike racks & trailer hitches: Ensure that any additions to the exterior of the vehicle like bike racks or trailer hitches do not obscure your field of vision, block any part of the license plate, or stick out from the vehicle in an unsafe manner.
  5. Tires: Overly worn tires are unsafe and are one of the most common reasons for failing an inspection. Tire depth must be greater than 2/32 of an inch.
  6. Bumpers: Bumpers must be free of jagged edges that could potentially be harmful to pedestrians. Bumpers do not have to be pristine but must not pose a risk to the public.
  7. Headlights & taillights: All lighting and their lenses should be clear, free from cracks, and in full working order.
  8. Windshield & mirror: The windshield and mirrors must be completely unbroken and fully functional to pass inspection.
  9. Parking brake: The vehicle's parking brake must engage and disengage smoothly and be capable of holding the vehicle under 13,000 rpms of acceleration.
  10. License plates: The vehicle's valid license plate must be fully visible on the front and rear of the vehicle and cannot be decorated or obscured with accessories or brackets.

If you're not sure whether you meet all of the requirements, schedule a service appointment with Copeland Chevrolet. We'll make sure your tires, headlights and other vehicle parts are in order.
